Effects of Propolis allergy on Human Body
One of the product hives that might trigger an allergic reaction is propollis. It is estimated that 1-2% of the world's population is allergic to this resinous substance. The propolis allergy is triggered by the presence of certain substances in its composition. Thus, most uncommon reactions are determined by LB-1, which can be identified in the processes of chemical dissolution. LB-1 has in its composition a substance called 3-Methyl-2-Butenyl Caffeate which functions as a very strong allergen.
Nowadays more and more people are developing a sensitive reaction to propolis due to its usage in bio-cosmetics and in numerous home-made remedies. For this reason it is very important to have a serious discussion with your doctor before starting any treatment that involves propolis usage. Propolis should be used with care by exactly following the right dosage.
Doctors point out that the frequent users of propolis might develop certain sensitivity to some of its constituent substances thus creating a fertile ground for the propolis allergy. People suffering from bee-venom allergy, pollen or honey allergy should limit their propolis consumption since they are more sensitive than other individuals. Uncommon reactions are more frequent in the case of individuals who consume more than 15 grams of propolis per day. Cosmetic products such as ointments, body lotions or oral solutions based on this hive product might cause an allergic reaction.
Propolis allergy might determine a pruritic reaction at the skin level. Other signs of propolis allergy are the presence of vesicles and bulla on the affected area. High sensitivity to this hive product can lead to contact dermatitis, shingles and even to constant eczematous dermatitis. If the propolis is ingested than the typical allergic reaction is oral mucositis with ulcerations and even very low blood pressure. Up till now there have not been reported cases of anaphylactic shock to propolis allergy. This does not mean that propolis must not be consumed with care and moderation.
It is advisable for pregnant women and nursing mothers to limit if not avoid propolis consumption. This substance might be harmful for the baby. People suffering from asthma should avoid this hive product since it has the power to worsen their medical condition and trigger a propolis allergy.
